Cingular sues telemarketers for unsolicited calls

(2006-10-11 15:39:06)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cingular Wireless, a joint venture between AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T - news) and BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS - news), on Tuesday said it filed three lawsuits in a U.S. federal court against telemarketers to stop them from making unsolicited and illegal calls to Cingular customers.

Cingular is seeking injunctions and damages in all the three lawsuits, filed in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta, the largest U.S. wireless service, said in a statement.

In recent months U.S. telecom providers have filed multiple lawsuits against companies they believe are infringing on their customers privacy. Other cases include the sale of customer call records by investigators.

It said one of the lawsuits alleges that Miami, Florida-based Sebell Telecommunications LLC made unsolicited marketing calls to Cingular subscribers using an automatic telephone dialing system and a prerecorded message.

Cingular said Sebell conspired with a Dominican Republic business Florida Vacation Corporation, to make the calls in June and July 2006.

Its second lawsuit alleges American Broadcast Systems Inc. of Seattle, Washington, used an autodialing system to send prerecorded messages about "free vacations" to customers.

In a third lawsuit, Cingular said that Go2Prepaid LLC of Miami, Florida, also made unsolicited prerecorded telemarketing calls to Cingular customers using a similar system.

The wireless company said Go2Prepaid worked with Alo Hispanos of Bogota, Colombia, to make the calls.

Reuters was not immediatley able to contact American Broadcast Systems, Sebell or Go2Prepaid for comment.
